Its not that i dont think they should mess with the Sherlock story as a franchise. I’m not saying that at all, i mean they already have so many shows out there with that sort of mystery dynamic, of course it was only a matter of time before they straight up remade Sherlock itself into a show. That’s not what bothers me.

The thing that bothers me is that it makes it seem like CBS knows about all the homosexual undertones in the Sherlock/Watson conon friendship, and, in an attempt to make those undertones normal, they turned Watson into a woman.

Because then, the sheer amount of caring and love the two characters have for each other, both in the books and in almost all interpretations in media, would be more accepted by a wider audience in America if it was between a man and a woman.

I’m sure they know full well about what ‘couple’ is most liked and talked about after BBC Sherlock came out. But they know that in America, huge chunks of the country want murder mystery without anything to make them uncomfortable, like two male friends living together or getting too close. People in America don’t respond well to things they 1)don’t understand, 2) aren’t seen as ‘natural’, and 3)feel that doesn’t reflect themselves on the screen.

It is true that many, MANY other shows have ‘bromantic’ characters (such as House and Wilson in ‘House md’), but these shows usually have so much heterosexual action going on, the homosexual undertones are usually parried off as a joke or mood lighteners and rarely integrate into main story line. With Sherlock, the relationship between the two men is the core of the show. It’s what keeps both characters going, pushing and learning from one another. And unfortunately, it’s a relationship, whether a strong friendship or more, makes general target audiences in America uncomfortable.

Well now the problem is solved. Make Watson a woman, and you’ll have that classic dynamic that was all well and good in other versions now acceptable to the masses. With Sherlock and Watson as man and woman, no one gets scared. No one has to ‘explain anything to their children’. No one has to call into the studios asking why those two fellas are so damn close.

So its not that I dislike the idea of interperating the SHerlock Holmes story into something new by making Watson a woman. And I even think its interesting that they would choose an Asian American to portray the character (i personally think Lucy Liu is one of the prettiest actresses in Hollywood). Its the fact that it seems like the studio is taking any chance that a character they want to look ‘cool’ and ‘awesome’ could be seen as possibly maybe not entirely straight, and therefor a failure as a character people could admire. And thats why I would be completely heart broken if they really did make Watson a woman.

Now before you fill my ask boxes with ‘maybe just give it a chance’ or ‘if you don’t like it then dont watch it’, keep in mind that if indeed this kind of thing does happen, I fully plan to not watch it.

The post in which fwips writes pretty much all my feelings about this way better than I could ever say or write.

Sighs at everything SIGHS

Again reiterating why I hate American television /o/

Yes. Yes. All of this.

It’s not that I don’t want to see a fem!Watson, it’s that it seems so obviously designed to appeal to heteronormative America that it’s just FUCKING SICKENING.

I applaud you.

A woman’s been cast in a leading role. Stop making up reasons why it could have happened and get over it.

There are no homosexual undertones in Sherlock Holmes at all.

Sure, it may appeal to a wider American audience more than two men being close, but I sincerely doubt that’s why they’ve done it. Chances are they just want to try something new, and differentiate themselves from the BBC adaptation because all the fans are getting themselves in a tizz about the American adaptation somehow copying the BBC. Which it isn’t doing. At all.

It’s refreshing that a cool character isn’t a man for once.

In a male dominated world this is excellent news. I fucking hope they cast a woman as Sherlock just to shut everybody up.

First of all, ^^^^^^ XD

Next, Fwips puts it perfectly and I wouldn’t watch it either. I just couldn’t handle it and I don’t even like that they are making it. We really don’t need another superfluous mystery drama on TV anyway, no matter how cool the original characters are. Rule 63 is only meant for fanfictions, CBS.
